• Terms & Conditions At Driving Explorer School: Driving Explorer Driving School promises to deliver training to everybody, subject to them accepting the following terms and conditions. Driving Licence and Fitness to Drive: You must hold a current, valid driving licence or provisional licence, which must be produced on, or in advance of, your first driving lesson. You must meet the requirements to be legally and medically fit to drive.
• The client’s ability to read a number plate at the statutory 20.5 meters at the first lesson will be tested by an instructor. The use of glasses or contact lenses is allowed where appropriate. If a client is required to wear glasses or contact lenses to drive but attends a lesson without wearing them, the lesson will be cancelled or terminated. If a client is taking medication or prescription drugs that might affect their ability to drive, it is their responsibility to inform the instructor before the lesson starts.
• Training Location: Unless an alternative arrangement has been made, each lesson will start from and finish at the same location.
• The instructor will decide on a suitable location for the practical lessons to proceed, ensuring the safety of the client and the general public is not endangered. This may mean in some cases, that the instructor will need to drive to and from the lesson location, with this journey time forming part of the lesson.
• Driving Tests and Bookings: We advise that you always consult with your instructor first, before booking your practical driving test. This is so they can check their diary to ensure the car is free. If you fail to do so, it may result in your instructor being unable to guarantee availability for your test.
• You must then notify your instructor when a booking has been made. If a Driving Explorer Driving School car is needed for the test, the booking period will be based on the instructor’s normal diary schedule, so you will require a minimum booking length of two and a half hours on the time of the test. If our instructor deems that the provision for using a driving school vehicle might cause a risk to public safety, they reserve the right to refuse the use of a driving school vehicle for the test. If our instructor considers the candidate to not be at test standard, the driving instructor reserves the right to refuse the use of a driving school vehicle for the test. Your instructor cannot and will not be held responsible for test appointments that are cancelled by the DVSA for any reason. It is the full responsibility of the customer for taking all necessary documentation to the practical driving test. Failure to do so could result in the cancellation of the test. Driving Explorer Driving School will make every effort to maintain their vehicles to a high standard. Your driving instructor cannot and will not be responsible for any mechanical or electrical faults that might happen before, or during your practical test.
• Payments: If you decide to stop your lessons before completing a discounted block of lessons, you will be charged in full for completed lessons and the rest will be refunded.

• If you have made a payment in advance online then decide to cancel within the time scale giving 96hours notice 4 Days then driving explorer will charge a £15 admin charge.

• Your Rights: Driving Explorer School Instructors will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Our instructors may greet you with a handshake, but otherwise, they will avoid physical contact with clients except in the case of an emergency.
• Our instructors reserve the right to decide against giving tuition in accordance with legislation on discrimination of the Driving Standards Agency Code of Practice for Approved Driving Instructors.

• Appointments:
• Whilst every care will be taken to ensure that the pupil receives the training at the requested time and with the instructor as booked, all bookings are made on the understanding that Driving Explorer driving school instructor is not responsible for the postponement of training due to adverse weather conditions, mechanical breakdown of equipment, absence or sickness of staff or any other cause beyond our control. Driving Explorer Driving School is not responsible for Driving Tests appointments postponed by the Driver and Vehicle Standard Agency.
• Personal Property:
• Naturally every endeavor is made to safeguard the personal property of any trainee, but Driving Explorer driving school instructor points out that the school accepts no liability whatsoever for jewellery, cash, clothing, mobile phones or any other property left in the training vehicle.
• Damage to the School Vehicle:
• During your driving lessons, the Instructor will make every effort to avoid damage to the vehicle. If the Instructor considers that you were driving in an unsafe way despite best efforts made and actual damage is caused by your negligence, then you will be expected to pay half towards repairs up to the level of excess towards the driving tuition policy. This will be discussed at the time of the damage.
• During your Driving Test, the Examiner will not prevent you from hitting the kerb or causing minor damage to the car. Therefore all damage caused whilst on Test will be charged to you the pupil up to the full level of excess on the driving tuition policy.
• Infringements: Our instructors promise to make every effort to teach you to the highest standard possible. However, they cannot and will not be held liable for any errors that customers commit whilst driving and/or whilst unaccompanied by our instructor before, during or after the test. Our instructors cannot and will not be held responsible for any speeding fines or infringement fines. These are the sole responsibility of the customer.

A Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA), is legally required if you are involved in the transportation or storage of Dangerous Goods.

The Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations specify that any organisation involved in the carriage, or related packing, loading, filling, or unloading of dangerous goods has a legal obligation to appoint a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA).

Subject to certain concessions, companies involved in the carriage or related loading of dangerous goods by road must appoint an appropriately qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA). Personnel wishing to be employed as Dangerous Goods Safety Advisers should attend this online course.

Updated guidelines from the HSE regarding the ratio of practical to e-learning mean the course is the equivalent to 3 days of classroom learning. This course is awarded by 18 CPD points.

About this course

This Level 3 course is the highest workplace first aid course in the UK. It encompasses both emergency first aid and theoretical online modules. Certifying learners to deliver first aid in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

The classroom day (6 hours) is practical in nature where learners are taught a core set of life saving skills from one of our team. The day is assessed through practical observation and multiple choice questions. 

The e-learning course (12 hours) can be completed before or after the practical day of attendance on a computer, smartphone or tablet. The e-learning course is assessed via questions, puzzles and interactive content.

Why this course?

Level 3 First Aid at Work (3 Day) is suitable for construction workers, hospitality (including events), warehouses (where machinery is used) and factories.

It is recommended that low risk businesses who are responsible for over 100 people e.g. schools, should have at least one person certified in first aid at work. Within high risk industries all first aiders should complete this course.

This course is also suitable for groups of learners (in-house). Our dedicated office team is on hand to liaise with you and arrange the training on a time and date to suit your needs.

About this course

This is the highest paediatric first aid qualification that can be taken within the workplace. On the classroom day learners can expect to be taught a core set of lifesaving skills that could be used to save the life of an infant / child in an emergency. 

The classroom day is assessed through practical observation and multiple choice questions at the end of the day. 

The e-learning module comprises seven interactive modules which can be completed on a smartphone, tablet or computer. The module is assessed through questions, puzzles and other interactive content.

Driving practical test questions you will be ask on your  driving test

1. About the questions

You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions during your car driving test.

The examiner will ask you one:

• ‘tell me’ question (where you explain how you’d carry out a safety task) at the start of your test, before you start driving
• ‘show me’ question (where you show how you’d carry out a safety task) while you’re driving

 

1. ‘Tell me’ questions
2. Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

2. Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.

3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Note: Some restraints might not be adjustable.

4. Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.

5. Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).

6. Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.

Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

7. Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).

8. Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on this car.

Explain you’d operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.

9. Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made.

Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

10. Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use it/them. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use.

11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.

Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.

12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil.

Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.

13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.

Identify high and low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.

14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Identify reservoir, check level against high and low markings.

You need to open the bonnet and tell the examiner how you’d do the check if you’re asked question 12, 13 or 14.

TRAIN TO BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR with Driving Explorer School (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency approved)

The name Driving Explorer has been associated with Driving Instructor Training since 2018.

We like to train our own instructors to achieve the high standards necessary and to run a successful business however, we are also keen to meet competent qualified and partly trained instructors with a view to joining us.

We train around the Official Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Syllabus for the three examinations needed.

We train you to run a successful business and offer excellent franchise opportunities  or being an independent driving instructor with tuition vehicles owned by the school or yourself for full or part-time positions.

All of our training is “pay as you go” and this means that we do not ask you to pay for the training costs upfront.

The Job

Becoming a driving instructor is more than a job; it’s a career and working as a driving instructor is incredibly rewarding both personally and financially. It’s something I (Tariq Dulull) started in 2018 and it’s something I’ve never regretted.

It’s a “clean and tidy” job and taking a  pupil with no driving experience to a successful driving test pass is one of the most amazing feelings ever. There’s a good sense of camaraderie within Driving Explorer what with the back up of our office and it’s 2 full time staff and also amongst the  3 instructors that work here. It’s a good team.

What you can earn

Your income is dependent on the hours that you work but if you start and work a 40-hour week, and teach in an Automatic vehicle you should receive £1400  based on our hourly charges of £35 or £37 per hour.

There are obviously expenses such as the car payment to us or your own car purchase and fuel etc but your gross weekly income should be about £900 to £1000. And that’s based on working just 40 hours.

You can work as much or as little as you want and remember, hopefully this isn’t all about the money. It’s a good job financially but it’s also very personally rewarding. A person coming into this profession for the passion will always be a better instructor than one coming in “just for the money”.

Costs and getting started

Again, we do not ask for full training fees in advance. Our costs are generally cheaper than other establishments .

Although considerably less training fees are charged you will receive the best standard of training that we can possibly supply.

£150(part one training fees). This covers training manuals, books and online classes.

Part two training is charged at £40 per hour, and you pay for each lesson as you take them. To give you an idea of training generally taken, we find that about 6hours for part two is normal (some people needing more, some less).

Part three training is again paid for as you take each lesson, again at £40 per hour. You will almost certainly need to take a minimum of 40 hours probably more.

Although you should already have substantial knowledge of subjects covered within the part one and part two examinations part three will almost certainly be something new to you. You must therefore budget for a minimum of 40 hours.

Check you’re ready to pass your driving test

You’ll usually be ready to take your driving test when:

You are dealing with everything in your driving lessons, private practice and mock tests consistently, confidently and independently.

1. You do not need prompts from your driving instructor

You need to be dealing with every part of driving consistently, confidently and independently – without any prompting from your driving instructor.

You’ll be ready for your test when you’re able to adapt to situations and see why perfecting your skills makes you safer and more fuel-efficient.

2. You do not make serious or dangerous mistakes when you’re driving

You need to be a good and safe driver to pass the driving test.

If you’re making serious or dangerous mistakes during your driving lessons and brushing them off as ‘silly mistakes’, you’re not ready to pass your driving test and drive on your own.

3. You can pass mock driving tests

Taking and passing mock driving tests with your driving instructor will help you understand if you’ve reached the standard that’s needed to pass.

4. You have practised ways of managing your nerves

It’s really important to be able to manage your nerves to be a safe driver.

Practise ways of managing your nerves to help you stay calm and focused when you take your test. This will help you in the vital months after you’ve passed your test, too.

5. Your driving instructor agrees you’re ready

If your driving instructor says you’re not ready to take your driving test, listen to them.

Driving instructors are specially trained road safety experts. They’ve got lots of driving experience – and they know what it takes to pass the driving test.

Remember, they want you to be a safe driver, keep your insurance costs low, and enjoy driving for years to come.

Restricted Licence External CPC Transport Management

If you hold a Restricted Operator’s licence, you are not obliged to employ a ‘professionally competent’ person to manage your transport operations. However, you are still subject to the same sets of regulations as higher-tier operator licence holders. We can offer a consultancy service on either a retainer or an ad-hoc basis, this service can include tachograph analysis and reporting. You will be provided with a comprehensive administration system for both vehicles and drivers to ensure you remain compliant with all current regulations.

Monthly Fee from £199.00, minimum billing applies. Based on an initial 3-month contract, monthly thereafter.

Operator Licence Applications

We undertake your new operator licence application on your behalf, ensuring everything is in order and providing guidance and support. £400.00

What will the External Transport Manager do?

The Senior Traffic Commissioner identified the following non-exhaustive list of the types of activity which might be expected of a transport manager.

General Duties

• Manage and review compliance systems to ensure that they are effective
• Address any shortcomings such as prohibitions and/or annual test failures
• Ensure that relevant changes are notified to the Traffic Commissioner in accordance with operator licence requirements
• Keep up to date on relevant changes in standards and legislation

Driver Admin

• Ensure that drivers hold the appropriate licence for the vehicle they are driving (including non-GB vocational drivers from EU member states who are required to register their driving licences with DVLA within 12 months of being resident)
• Ensure that regular checks are carried out on the drivers’ licences
• Ensure that vocational drivers hold a valid driver CPC qualification (DQC)
• Ensure that all driver hours records are kept for a period of no less than 12 months
• Ensure that all working time records are kept for a period of no less than 24 months

Driver Management

• Ensure compliance with driving hours rules (EU or Domestic Hours rules)
• Ensure that drivers are recording their duty, driving time and rest breaks on the appropriate equipment or in drivers’ hours books and their records are being handed back for inspection as required
• Where appropriate, download and store data from the vehicle digital tachograph unit. This should be at least every 90 days and from the drivers’ tachograph smart cards, at least every 28 days
• Ensure that driver hours records are retained and are available to be produced during the relevant period
• Ensure that records are retained for the purposes of the Working Time Directive (WTD) and that they are available to be produced during the relevant period
• Ensure that drivers are adequately trained and competent to operate all relevant vehicles and equipment
• Contribute to relevant training and subsequent disciplinary processes as required.

Driver Operations

• Ensure that drivers are completing and returning their driver defect reporting sheets and that defects are recorded correctly
• Ensure that all drivers and mobile workers take adequate breaks and periods of daily and weekly rest (as per the relevant regulations which apply).

Vehicle Admin

• Ensure that vehicle maintenance records are retained for a period of no less than 15 months and are made available upon request
• Ensure that vehicles are specified as required and that operator licence discs are current and displayed correctly
• Ensure that vehicle payloads notifications are correct, height indicators are fitted and correct, and tachograph calibrations are up to date and displayed
• Ensure that there are up-to-date certificates of insurance indemnifying company cars, commercial vehicles, and plant
• Ensure a suitable maintenance planner is completed and displayed appropriately, setting preventative maintenance inspection dates at least 6 months in advance. This should include the Annual Test and other testing or calibration dates.

Vehicle Management

• Ensure that vehicles and trailers are kept in a fit and roadworthy condition
• Ensure that reported defects are either recorded in writing or in a format that is readily accessible and repaired promptly
• Ensure that vehicles and trailers that are not roadworthy are taken out of service
• Ensure that vehicles and towed equipment are made available for safety inspections, service, repair, and statutory testing
• Ensure that safety inspections and other statutory testing are carried out within the notified O-licence maintenance intervals (ISO weeks)
• Liaise with maintenance contractors, manufacturers, hire companies, and dealers, as might be appropriate. They also make certain vehicles and trailers are serviced in accordance with manufacturer recommendations

In addition to ensuring your compliance, the external transport manager plays a vital role in reducing your fuel costs, assessing your current driver Health and Safety policy status, and assisting with implementing training programs.

What types of O licence are there?

There are different categories of licence according to the use to which vehicles are put.

Restricted licence – This allows the carriage of goods, but only on own account, within Great Britain and abroad.

Standard licence – This allows the carriage of goods for hire or reward in Great Britain (and also permits own account movements in GB and abroad).

Standard international licence – This allows the carriage of goods for hire or reward (and on own account) within Great Britain and abroad.

Do I need an O licence?

You need an O licence to operate vehicles above 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes) gross vehicle weight (gvw) that are used to carry goods (ie anything not permanently attached to the vehicle) on public roads for trade or business purposes. This includes short-term rental vehicles hired for as little as one day. The O licence must be held by the person – whether an individual or a company – who ‘uses’ the vehicle and this may or may not be the owner of the vehicle. The user of the vehicle can be:

• The driver, if they own it or if they are leasing, buying on hire purchase terms, hiring or borrowing the vehicle (eg a typical owner-driver operation)
• The person whose servant or agent the driver is – ie whoever employs or controls the driver

This covers both ‘own account’ and ‘hire or reward’ operations. Additionally, under O licence legislation all holders of standard National Operator Licences must be professionally competent or employ someone who is professionally competent. The most popular method of demonstrating this is to hold a National Certificate of Professional Competence.

What are EU Derogations?

A derogation is an exemption from or relaxation of a rule or law. The term is often referred to in regard of EU rules (Regulation (EC) 561/2006) governing driver hours and vehicle operations. There are a number of vehicles exempt from EU regulation, regardless of where the vehicle is being driven in the EU, you should contact us or refer to Regulation (EC) 561/2006 for a complete list. Furthermore, the EU rules grant Member States the power to apply derogations to further specific categories of driver and vehicle operations while on national journeys. For definitive guidance it is necessary to refer to case law, which is constantly evolving, therefore we strongly advise seeking clarification before relying on a derogation.

How much will it cost?

The GV79 application fee payable to the Traffic Commission is £257. The fee payable for the issue of the licence is £401. Additionally, there will be the expense associated with advertising in your local newspaper the statutory public notice; typically this can cost approximately £250, depending on the publication.
